The project drew inspiration from industrial Zünd flatbed cutters. The objective was to build an open-source, modular CNC architecture capable of interchangeable operations: knife blade cutting, oscillating creasing, tangential tooling, and high-speed spindle routing.

During the design process, kinematic stability was paramount. While CoreXY offers minimal gantry inertia, the large physical footprint would introduce significant belt lengths and elasticity/slack over time. Therefore, we engineered a dual-synchronized Cartesian Y-axis coupled via an overhead torsion cross-shaft to eliminate gantry racking.
The X-axis features a direct-drive carriage on hardened linear guide rails. To prevent unwanted rotational moments on the tool carriage, the A-axis motor mass was strategically relocated to the rear of the gantry. This counterbalances the cantilevered mass and ensures smooth motion during high-speed cutting passes.
